Kate Mortenson, CEO, 2019 Minneapolis Final Four™ Local Organizing Committee
Kate will share her thoughts on hosting a national sporting event and showcasing the unique assets of our community. Kate is a civic-engaged, community impact leader, experienced in strategy and implementation for complex initiatives. After serving as Bid Director, Kate was named President and CEO of the 2019 Minneapolis Final Four™ Local Organizing Committee, responsible to execute all aspects of the NCAA ™ Men’s Basketball Championship in 2019. Previously a United States Peace Corps Volunteer and journalism professional at Hubbard Broadcasting, she combines experience in diverse sectors with a passion for creating positive change in the community. Her projects generate significant financial resources and leadership engagement across sectors, from the ‘grass roots’ to the ‘grass tops’. In 2012, Kate began working with Northside Achievement Zone CEO, Sondra Samuels, to build a community of support for the achievement gap closing initiative. Kate launched “Friends of the Future” to involve hundreds of influential Minnesotans with this transformational Northside effort. In 2015, that work expanded to include legislative advocacy for NAZ, the St. Paul Promise Neighborhood, and similar programs in Greater Minnesota. Kate serves on several non-profit boards, including Minnesota Public Radio, Mortenson Family Foundation, and The Greater Twin Cities United Way, where she Co-chaired the 2015 Centennial year “100,000 Volunteers for Good” initiative. She is also a member of the Minnesota Women's Economic Roundtable. In 2012 Kate received the Engaged Philanthropist Award, given by Social Venture Partners and Minnesota Philanthropy Partners, to acknowledge new and innovative approaches to philanthropy. In 2016, she was named a Girl Scouts River Valleys “Woman of Distinction”. Kate lives in Minneapolis, with her husband, David, and their three children.
